ALLEX Graduates 29th Class of Trainees

The graduation ceremony for the 2017 ALLEX Teacher Training Institute at Washington University in St. Louis marked an important milestone in the history of the organization: It ushered in the 30th Anniversary year of this unique program that began as Exchange:Japan in 1988 and evolved into ALLEX (The Alliance for Language Learning and Educational Exchange) in 2005. It was 29 years ago that a Japanese philanthropist, Akio Terumasa, and Eleanor Jorden, a linguistics professor at Cornell, devised an ingenious program to advance the study of Japanese language at American universities. They called it Exchange:Japan and by the second year 76 universities had young Japanese graduates teaching their language to students who had never before had the opportunity to study an Asian language.
